Golden Visa
The Portugal Golden Visa is a residency-by-investment scheme designed for non-EU individuals. It offers advantages, for the investors and their family members, like visa-free travel in Schengen countries and the opportunity for permanent residency, access to high-quality education and healthcare, or citizenship.
Created in 2012, the Portugal Golden Visa is recognized as one of the most attractive options globally. Its main goal was to encourage foreign investments, benefiting the Portuguese economy. The Portugal Golden Visa remains the only route to an EU passport, without a minimum 6-month stay at its investment level.
The program suffered significant changes in October 2023, although these have no retroactive effect on existing applications. While real estate purchases have been removed, other investment routes are still available such as donations to arts, venture capital funds, donation to research activities and company creation.
Main benefits of the Golden Visa Residency Permit:
- Free access to 27 European Union countries and more than 172 countries without a visa
- Affordable investment options starting at €250,000.00
- 5 years to obtain the Portuguese passport
- Short stay requirements (7 days per year or 14 days every two years)
- Investing in an emerging market
- Family reunification: The dependent family members (spouse/partner, minor children, adult children, as long as still studying and single, and depend on parents/in laws) can be included in the application.
- The right to live, work and study in Portugal, access to public health system and education.
- Easy access to travel to other Schengen area countries.
The D7 VISA
Among the several ways of obtaining a residency permit, the one known as a D7 Visa, is a residency permit for applicants in the possession of passive income, these funds can be come from pensions, real estate, interests, dividends, royalties, or financial investment. It provides residency status to non-EU / EEA / Swiss citizens, including retirees, who intend to relocate to Portugal.
Through the D7 visa, the applicants obtain the right to live, work and/or study in Portugal. The applicant can take employment or establish a business in Portugal. This is applicable to their spouses, dependent children, and parents. Another advantage is, of course, visa-free travel throughout the Schengen Area of 26 European countries.
With the D7 visa, the applicants become tax residents in Portugal, which can bring them tax benefits. It’s an analysis that must be counted case by case, so it must be checked with your lawyer and tax adviser.
All Portuguese residents have the right to benefit from the healthcare system and educational system.
After 5 years of residency the applicants can apply for the permanent residency and/or Portuguese citizenship.
The Digital Nomad Visa
The Portugal Digital Nomad Visa allows remote workers and freelancers to get residency in the country. Residents from non-EU countries can apply for residency in Portugal through this visa type.
Once the visa is approved, the applicant can reside in Portugal for at least a year. Portugal is a nomad-friendly country, where the applicants can live the experience and the advantages of living by the ocean, in a safe, modern and welcoming country.
In Portugal, while you work remotely, you can also enjoy the country’s beauty and work from any part of the country. You can join the digital nomad community as well.
The process for obtaining a residence visa is divided into two phases: the first begins at the Portuguese consulate in the country of origin, with the submission of the visa application, and the second is instructed by the Portuguese Immigration Authorities (AIMA) as soon as the digital nomad enters Portugal using the visa.
Thus, the residence visa allows a foreigner to enter Portugal for a period of 4 months (equivalent to 120 days) and then apply for a residence permit valid for a period of 2 years, renewable for subsequent periods of 3 years.
Residence permit holders can apply for a permanent residence permit after 5 years of legal residence in Portugal and get Portuguese citizenship for life.
